The Norwegian government’s environmental agency pointed out that starting from June 1, 2014, products containing PFOA or PFOA salts or esters alone are prohibited from being manufactured, imported, exported, and sold in Norway.
PFOA is perfluorooctanoic acid, which is often used as a processing aid in the production of high-performance fluoropolymers such as Teflon, and fluorotelomerization chemical products may also contain PFOA. PFOA, often used in waterproof and breathable outdoor jackets, may damage the reproductive system of mammals and may cause cancer.
When PFOA is used on fabrics, the content will be limited to less than 1 mg per square meter.
Norway’s environmental protection agency stated that although each product only contains trace amounts of PFOA, the total amount in humans, the environment and the food chain adds up to a staggering amount. The chemical has been found in polar bears and polar birds, both of which are far from areas where PFOA is produced and used.
The Norwegian government is pushing this restriction to EU countries and the European Economic Area. Due to the recommendations of Norway and Germany, the European Chemicals Control Agency (ECHA) has decided to classify PFOA as a PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) substance. Included in the EU’s list of substances of special concern.
