By “scanning” the clothing fabric, its ingredient content can be easily “read out”. Nandu reporters learned yesterday from the Zhongshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau that a science and technology project of the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, jointly undertaken by Jiangxi Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, Zhongshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau and other units, won the 2014 China Textile Industry Federation “Light of Textile” Science and Technology Second Prize for Progress. The success of this technology is expected to comprehensively improve the current situation of unqualified clothing fiber ingredient labeling.
It is reported that the scientific research project of the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China, “Development of Textile Fiber Content Standards for Modeling of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Analysis Technology” hosted by the Zhongshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, has introduced near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) technology in the fiber identification of textile materials. Just place the test probe on a uniform, smooth finished product sample and scan it. The probe collects the spectrum module of the test sample and compares it with the reference material model spectrum module in the memory of the test equipment to detect the composition distribution of the textile. At present, Zhongshan Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has tried this technology on five blended products of polyester and cotton blends, cotton and spandex, cotton and silk, polyester and viscose, and polyester and spandex, and obtained reliable results.
According to the Zhongshan Bureau, in recent years, the inconsistency between the ingredients indicated on textile and clothing labels and the actual ingredients, adulteration of textiles and low quality have frequently occurred. From May to August this year, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine organized supervision and spot inspections on imported and exported goods outside the legal inspection catalog. The results showed that the unqualified rate of imported clothing was as high as 39.5%, and the unqualified clothing fiber component labeling became the main reason. In the future, this technology will play an important role in identifying the ingredients of various mixed textiles and strengthening market supervision.
The application of near-infrared technology in clothing will greatly facilitate citizens’ quality control when purchasing clothing. More citizens are concerned about whether they can purchase products with near-infrared spectroscopy technology? Relevant people from the Zhongshan Bureau said that near-infrared spectroscopy technology is currently in the research and development stage, and more data will need to be collected and a database established in the future. Once the technology matures and is introduced to the market, clothing manufacturers will be the first to use it. Through QR codes or other forms of information input, consumers can complete the identification of materials by “scanning” it.
