Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory in the United States have developed a new sponge called Oleo Sponge that not only absorbs spilled oil dispersed in bodies of water, but can also be wrung out to allow the reuse of materials and recovered oil.
They create a thin “primer layer” of metal oxides within the sponge, to which lipophilic molecules then stick.
In tests, Oleo Sponge was able to absorb diesel and crude oil from above and below water.
In addition, after it is wrung out, the material can be reused without breaking.
