Correspondent from China Cotton Network: On April 26, the weather was fine in Cangzhou, Hebei Province. Some cotton farmers who “hurried early” are rushing to sow spring seeds, but most cotton farmers plan to wait until the ground temperature rises again and the weather becomes stable again. It is expected that in May Spring sowing of cotton will begin in the first half of the year. At this juncture, an “old cotton farmer” called and asked if there was any definite news about the National Cotton Production Reserve. What he is concerned about is how many production protection zones Hebei will designate and what kind of policies will be implemented in the protection zones.
In fact, in recent times, cotton farmers and ginners have been asking about cotton production reserves. There are still many, many people paying attention to cotton farmers, so that the spark will not be extinguished. A cotton farmer in Xiajin, Shandong Province, said that he has been engaged in cotton cultivation for nearly 30 years. Over the past 30 years, his cotton cultivation started from a few acres of responsible land, and has continued to cultivate dozens or hundreds of acres of cotton in recent years. As the cotton farmer said – what you sow grows feelings. If you don’t grow cotton in any year, you will feel psychologically empty.
There are also many “old cotton farmers” who have been growing cotton for more than ten or decades. They know cotton as well as they know themselves and treat cotton like their own children. Therefore, if the general situation and background were not favorable for cotton cultivation, they would not give up. These people are generally over 40 years old and are mainly professional cotton farmers with responsible fields and certain professional skills, including “big cotton farmers”.
Policy guidance is the key, and only a single spark can start a prairie fire. On April 10, the “Guiding Opinions of the State Council on the Establishment of Grain Production Functional Zones and Important Agricultural Products Production Protection Areas” (hereinafter referred to as the “Opinions”) clearly stated that “focusing on Xinjiang, supplemented by the main production areas of the Yellow River Basin and Yangtze River Basin, 35 million acres of cotton production protection zones have been designated.” This is a “shot in the arm” for many people who have deep feelings for cotton. On the 26th, a cotton farmer in Cangzhou said that he plans to plant 37 acres of cotton this year. The reason why he is afraid of large-scale planting for the time being is mainly because the “Opinions” of the State Council are available, but they have not yet been “implemented” in Hebei Province. The cotton farmer said that if the cotton production reserve policy is implemented, then he will be “open” to growing cotton.
In fact, many cotton farmers have plans to grow cotton in protected areas, or hope to include their cotton fields in protected areas. “I believe that with policy support, the development of cotton in the mainland will be like a prairie fire.” A market person said with confidence.
Only with the development of diversified operations can the mainland’s cotton industry continue to prosper. A certain cotton ginner in Dongying, Shandong Province cooperates with a local 400-type cotton ginnery to form a “bigger + ginnery” model. This model can effectively avoid risks and increase profit margins. There is also the “large household + ginning factory + textile enterprise” model, which has a longer industrial chain and formed strong competitiveness. There are also some areas where rural cooperatives are implemented, where farmers freely participate in shares, integrate land resources, and integrate development, which also has strong competitiveness for cotton planting.
Who will hold up the mainland cotton industry? The first is enthusiasm and love, the second is policy support, and the third is self-effort and scientific development. In this way, the world of cotton will be sunny and develop at a high speed!
