Recently, researchers at Harvard University have developed a lightweight and portable nanofiber spinning device.

This portable nanospinning equipment has high production efficiency and can precisely control the orientation. The spun nanofibers can be used for wound dressing on the battlefield, spinning of customized fabrics, etc. By adjusting fiber orientation and deposition methods, researchers create nanofiber scaffolds that can simulate the highly oriented tissues in the body and design special clothing to fit a variety of shapes.

Unlike other spinning equipment that requires setting many parameters, this stretch spinning method only needs to set one process parameter – setting the solution viscosity to control the fiber diameter, which can greatly simplify the steps of using the workbench and improve the adaptability of the equipment.

The system can be spun point-to-point, and the custom-produced nanofibers could be expanded in the future to process spray sportswear that gradually heats or cools an athlete’s body, or spins sterile bandages that attach directly to wounds and fabrics that can locally change their mechanical properties. The researchers say the clothing could be made using stretch spinning equipment. The team applied the fiber network directly to Barbie’s knee joints. This application is still in the conceptual stage.
