Myanmar’s “Global New Light” reported on December 3 that according to news from Chin State in Myanmar, the newly built silk reeling factory in Tiddim, Chin State, can produce 2 tons of silk thread per year. The Chin State government allocated 300 million kyats (approximately 1.5 million yuan) to purchase winding machines for the silk reeling factory.
Myanmar was the top ten exporter of silkworm cocoons in 2018, accounting for 2.8% of global exports. Myanmar exported $143 million worth of silkworm cocoons in 2018. The price of Myanmar silkworm cocoons is 5,000-8,000 kyats (about 25-40 yuan) per pound.
Myanmar exports 1,000 tons of silkworm cocoons to China through the Muse Port every year. In addition, silk threads produced in Myanmar are exported to China through Leki Port, and the export volume is increasing year by year.
Myanmar’s sericulture industry is mainly distributed in Kachin State, Kayah State, Chin State, Shan State, and Mandalay, with a mulberry planting area of 6,400 acres. Chin State was once known as the “Silk City”, but due to various reasons, mulberry tree planting has declined.
