In order to curb the spread of the new coronavirus epidemic, the Cambodian government recently announced that it will implement a 14-day blockade starting from April 15. However, the latest news yesterday (April 27) pointed out that the local government’s new regulations will extend the shutdown period by one week to May 5. The order requires the temporary suspension and closure of all non-essential activities. The garment, footwear, and travel goods manufacturing industries are classified as non-essential businesses, and several local garment factories are temporarily suspended.

The Garment Manufacturers Association of Cambodia (GMAC) stated that this blockade not only disrupted the transportation of raw materials and finished products, but also affected some factories outside the blockade area. , because workers living in blocked areas cannot leave home to go to work.

Due to the inability of the factory to operate normally, GMAC added that some GMAC members may not be able to deliver goods as scheduled due to the inability of the factory to operate normally, and appealed to all relevant stakeholders for their understanding. In this special case, no penalties will be imposed.

There are approximately 1,000 garment, footwear, and travel goods factories in Cambodia, with a rough estimate of 750,000 employees. </p
