The International Oeko-Tex Association, a textile testing and certification agency, is about to launch an independent environmental protection and social responsibility corporate certification mechanism. The certification mechanism STeP (Sustainable Textile Production) provides textile brands, retailers and manufacturers with sustainable production of “trustworthy and transparent” environmental label certification documents.
STeP will be publicly announced for the first time at the Prime Source Forum held in Hong Kong on March 26, 2013. It will replace the current Oeko-TexStandard1000 standard and is expected to be officially launched on June 12.
Pierre Haug, secretary-general of the Oeko-Tex Association, said that the new STeP certification mechanism mainly reviews and evaluates textile-related manufacturers in terms of quality management, chemical use, environmental protection, environmental management, social responsibility, health and safety, etc.
The Oeko-Tex certification agency will audit factory production facilities, including unannounced inspections, and will also include audits of already ISO9000 and ISO14001 certified industries.
