According to the British Daily Mail, Canadian experts have recently developed a new type of smart clothing that will change the color and appearance of the clothing as the wearer moves.

The “Kama Chameleon” project at Concordia University in Canada weaves electronic fibers into clothing to store the body’s energy. This new invention allows clothes to change shape and color, and shirts to charge mobile phones.

Professor Joanna Pozheska from the Department of Design and Art at Concordia University said it will still take a long time for this kind of smart clothing to become popular in commercial streets. We won’t see clothing like this in stores for the next 20-30 years, but its practicality and creative potential are exciting. Our goal was to create a novel garment that could transform in complex and surprising ways, far more complex than reversible jackets and heat-sensing color-changing shirts, which is why we named this project “Karma Chameleon.”

Professor Pozheska pointed out that the invention highlight of this research project is to embed electronic and computer functions in fiber materials. Rather than simply being attached to fabric, the electronic components are woven into new synthetic fibers.

The fibers contain multiple layers of polymers that interact with each other as they stretch. Smart fabrics have a variety of uses, including: Clothing made from electronically conductive materials that can warm the wearer’s body.

In addition, the status and appearance of the clothes can also be controlled by people other than the wearer. In the future, this kind of smart clothing can also be applied to soldiers’ combat uniforms. It is reported that although smart clothing design has been obtained, there is still a certain gap between mass production. Currently, Bozheska’s new smart clothing design was released at the 2013 Smart Clothing Conference held in San Francisco, USA this week.
