The United States affirmed Ethiopia’s peaceful and stable attitude and measures to resolve the civil war, and stated that it would re-evaluate Ethiopia Returned to the list of recipients of the U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
On January 2, 2011, the United States kicked Ethiopia out of the list of AGOA beneficiary countries due to human rights issues caused by the Ethiopian civil war, which greatly affected Ethiopia’s textile and other industries. In 2020, Ethiopia relied on AGOA’s tax-free provisions to export $227 million in textiles to the United States, accounting for 43% of Ethiopia’s overall exports to the United States. </p
